Paris Night Weather and Sunset Times

Paris sits at 48.9°N, further north than Montreal, and its sunset moves more than five hours between midwinter and midsummer. That single fact decides which departure you should book, and it is the one thing no tour listing puts on its front page.

What the dark does to a night tour here

The floodlighting on the monuments is triggered by light sensors rather than a clock, so it comes on within ten minutes of dusk whatever the date. A tour that finishes before dusk therefore sees none of it. In June that means anything ending before about 22:40 is a sunset tour whatever the listing calls it, and in December a 6pm start is already fully dark.

Two independent things confirm it. One operator asks summer travellers to take the 9pm or 10pm departure because sunset is later; and a reviewer who booked a 6pm May departure wrote that the sun did not set until nine. The table below exists so that does not happen to you, and the night tour options page says which formats run late enough in each season.

Times are computed for central Paris and rounded to five minutes, and they shift by a few minutes across each month. Sunset and dusk are astronomy rather than forecast, so these are reliable in a way a temperature is not.

Paris Night month by month

January — sunset 17:20, dark 17:55

Dark by six, and the cheapest month to be out in it. Expect 3–7 °C after sunset and the coldest wind of the year along the river. Every departure time works, because there is no daylight left to wait for.

February — sunset 18:10, dark 18:40

Sunset moves back nearly an hour across the month. Still 4–8 °C in the evening and still fully dark by half past six. The quietest four weeks on the monuments.

March — sunset 18:55, dark 19:25

The clocks go forward on the last Sunday, and the sunset jumps an hour overnight. From 30 March the night bus switches to its 21:30 departure. Evenings run 6–11 °C.

April — sunset 20:40, dark 21:15

The first month where a 7pm booking is a mistake — it will still be daylight. Sunset is 20:40 by mid-month and dark follows at 21:15. Evenings reach 9–14 °C, which is the first comfortable open-top weather.

May — sunset 21:25, dark 22:00

Sunset 21:25, dark 22:00, and the 2CV operators start asking for 9pm and 10pm departures. This is the month people most often book a night tour and get an evening one. Temperatures 12–18 °C.

June — sunset 21:55, dark 22:40

The latest sunset of the year, at 21:55 around the solstice, with full dark not until 22:40. A 21:00 departure sails in daylight. Warm enough at 15–21 °C that the open-top formats are at their best.

July — sunset 21:50, dark 22:30

Barely different from June and equally demanding of a late booking. The 14 July holiday closes several monuments in the morning and fills the river in the evening. Evenings 17–23 °C.

August — sunset 21:05, dark 21:40

Sunset pulls back to 21:05 and dark to 21:40, so a 21:00 departure begins to work again by the end of the month. Warm, busy, and the peak month for the cruises. Temperatures 16–23 °C.

September — sunset 20:05, dark 20:35

The best compromise of the year: warm evenings at 13–19 °C and dark by half past eight. From 28 September the night bus moves to its 20:30 departure. Book 8.30pm or later.

October — sunset 19:00, dark 19:35

The clocks go back on the last Sunday and the evening arrives an hour earlier overnight. Sunset 19:00 mid-month, dark 19:35, temperatures 10–15 °C. Bring a coat for anything open-topped.

November — sunset 17:10, dark 17:45

Dark before six, and the Christmas illuminations begin going up on the Champs-Élysées and around Place Vendôme late in the month. Evenings 5–10 °C and often wet.

December — sunset 16:55, dark 17:30

The earliest sunset of the year, 16:55 around the solstice, with full dark at 17:30. A 6pm departure is a genuine night tour. The Christmas lights tour runs only now, and evenings sit at 3–8 °C.

The seasons, and which one you want

Winter, November to February. The best value of the year. Dark by six means a whole evening of illumination and an early dinner afterwards, the monuments are at their quietest, and December brings the Christmas lights. The cost is cold, and anything open-topped is hard work.

Spring and autumn, March to April and September to October. The compromise, and September is the best single month of the year for this: warm evenings and dark by half past eight.

Summer, May to August. Comfortable and beautiful, and the one season where you must read the departure time carefully. A 21:00 start in June is a daylight tour.

Rain, wind and the open-top question

Paris rain is spread thinly across the year rather than concentrated in a season, so there is no month you can book an open-top tour and be safe. What changes is how much a wet evening costs you: in July it is an inconvenience, and in January it ends the evening.

Best time of day to start

The twenty to forty minutes between sunset and full dark are the best light of the evening. The sky still holds colour, the floodlighting on the Eiffel Tower and everything around it is already on, and a photograph taken then has both. Photographers call it the blue hour and it is far shorter than an hour at this latitude.

If you are choosing between two departure times, take the earlier one in that window rather than the later one in full dark. If you are choosing between two dates, take the clear one.
