A private night tour is not simply a more expensive one. Three things change — how the fare is charged, where the evening starts, and who decides the route — and together they make it a different product rather than a better seat.
A vehicle and a driver-guide reserved for your party alone, collecting you from an address you name and returning you to it. Nobody else joins, there is no schedule to keep beyond your own, and the route is a starting proposal rather than a fixed loop.
The vehicles differ more than the format does. A vintage Citroën 2CV with the roof folded back is a different evening from an electric SUV with air conditioning, and both are different again from an open golf cart that parks in streets a coach cannot enter. What they share is that the evening belongs to you.
This is the fact that changes the arithmetic, and it is easy to miss. Three of these listings price the vehicle rather than the person: a 2CV at $336 carries up to three, and an electric SUV at $447 carries up to four. Divide those and a private car stops being the expensive option.
Most of the private tours take a street address and bring you back to it. No pontoon to find in the dark, no bus stop, and no question about how you are getting home at midnight — which is a real part of what the money buys in November.
Several of these listings say so in their own inclusions: a customisable itinerary, on-the-spot changes, multiple start times. If you have already seen the Eiffel Tower and would rather spend the time in Montmartre, a private driver simply does that. No group departure can.
With a party of two or three, the commentary is a conversation. The reviews of these listings name their guides constantly — Sophia, Phillip, Nicholas, Dean, Joao — which does not happen on a fifty-seat bus.
The honest comparison is not private against public but per-car against per-seat, and it turns on how many of you there are.

A single traveller should almost always take a group departure: a seventy-minute cruise at nineteen dollars does the river properly and a private car cannot compete on price for one. At three or four people the arithmetic flips completely.
Included across these listings: the vehicle and driver-guide, private transport, all fees and taxes, and on individual products bottled water, Wi-Fi on board, blankets, or champagne. Pickup and drop-off are included wherever they are offered.
Not included, on all but one: admission to any monument. These are exterior tours and one listing states it plainly — every stop is an exterior visit. Gratuities are excluded on most, food and drink on nearly all, and dinner specifically on the electric SUV.

Price band: $105 to $447, with three products charged per vehicle rather than per head.
Duration: two to three hours, which is the right length for the lit circuit. Nothing here runs longer, because after three hours you have seen it.
Booking window: these are the smallest-capacity products on the site — a 2CV takes three people — so they genuinely sell out. Book as soon as your dates are fixed; all but one refund in full up to 24 hours ahead.
Start time: after dark, which moves by five hours across the year. Our sunset times page gives the figure for your month, and one operator asks for a 9pm or 10pm departure from May to August for exactly that reason.
Solo travellers. A per-car fare divided by one is the worst value on the site. Take a cruise or the open-top bus, both of which are excellent alone, and put the difference towards dinner.

Anyone booking in the rain. Two of these are open-topped and the roof stays up when it is wet, which removes most of the reason to book them. A cruise is unaffected.
Anyone who wants to walk. A car covers ground and skips the streets. If what you want is the Marais or the quays on foot, a guided walk at sixty-four dollars does it better than a vehicle at four times the price, and the options page covers those.
